Creative Arts & Crafts for Mental Wellbeing

  • Overview of the course

    This is a discrete course for adults referred with a wide range of mental health difficulties.

    You will learn how to express yourself through your artwork in order to develop coping strategies, stress management, and to strengthen a sense of identity. You will develop your organisational and time management skills through participating in a range of mixed media crafts projects. This course will prepare you for progression onto an advanced arts and crafts course. You will also develop your English, maths and employability skills in preparation for progression onto higher independence, mainstream and Community Learning courses, and voluntary and paid work.

    What can I expect to learn?

    You will cover the following course outcomes:

    LO 1 Create at least 1 collage to display activities, places and people that make you feel good.

    1.1 Complete worksheet ‘Here’s What You Need to Know About Me!’ Describe activities, places and people that make you feel at least 6 different emotions.
    1.2 Describe the meaning of the word ‘collage’.
    1.3 Select the appropriate materials to create a collage of activities, places and people that make you feel good.
    1.4 Share your collage and at least 2 activities, places or people that make you feel good with your peers to develop confidence in communicating with others.

    LO 2 Select at least 1 inspirational word or phrase from an old book page. Create a positive image to illustrate the word or phrase and to stimulate positive feelings.

    2.1 Identify and label at least 4 positive book page images. Please include materials and techniques used and state how each image makes you feel.
    2.2 Create a range of at least 3 book page samples. Use positive colours, imagery and text.
    2.3 Using at least 1 of your book page samples create at least 1 image to motivate and inspire you to feel positive.

    LO 3 Create at least 1 winter decoration to beat the winter blues.

    3.1 Identify at least 3 things you like about winter.
    3.2 Identify and label at least 4 professional winter decorations. Please include materials and techniques used.

    3.3 Use at least 3 therapeutic paper crafts techniques to create at least 3 samples for a winter decoration.

    3.4 Using at least 1 of your paper crafts samples create at least 1 winter decoration out of recycled paper.

    3.5 Share your winter decoration with your peers. Discuss at least 1 paper crafts technique used and explain where you will display your decoration in order to beat the winter blues.

    You must be over 19 years old. You also need to come to college with a good attitude and be prepared to work hard.
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will agree an individual learning plan (ILP) with your tutor identifying what you want and need to gain from the course. You will build up a folder of work which shows the range of skills and knowledge you have developed. You will receive supportive feedback throughout the course and track your progress through your Individual Learning Plan.

    • A ring binder folder to keep your work organised is essential.
    • You will also need to bring a pen and a notepad to take notes.

    Assessment


    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.

    Financial


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, pleasecontact us via our Live Chat service available on any page of our website.

    Adult Learners


    Adult learners (19+) must provide evidence of their existing qualification at enrolment. Learners may not be able to enrol if this information is not provided when requested. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one applies to the exams you took):
