Bricklayer Level 2 Apprenticeship

The Bricklayer Level 2 Apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to start a hands-on career in the construction industry. This programme provides the practical skills and technical knowledge needed to build and repair walls, foundations, partitions, and other structures using bricks, blocks, and mortar.

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed by a construction company while receiving structured training at Bolton College. The course typically lasts around 24 to 30 months and combines on-site experience with classroom-based learning.

You’ll learn how to lay bricks and blocks, mix mortar, interpret technical drawings, and work safely on construction sites. The course also covers cavity walling, setting out structures, and using tools and equipment correctly.

In addition to practical skills, you’ll develop teamwork, problem-solving, and communication abilities—key qualities for working effectively in the construction industry.

There are no formal qualifications needed to start the Bricklayer Level 2 Apprenticeship—just a strong interest in construction and a willingness to work outdoors in a physically active role. This programme is ideal for individuals who enjoy practical work, have good attention to detail, and are keen to learn a skilled trade.

However, some employers may set their own entry requirements, such as specific GCSE grades or prior experience in construction-related activities. If you have not yet achieved a GCSE Grade 3/D or E (or equivalent) in English and Maths, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 1 in these subjects as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—support will be provided to help you achieve these essential qualifications alongside your bricklaying training.

You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through practical observations, written assignments, and a portfolio of evidence. Your college tutor and employer will support you in developing your skills and tracking your progress.

At the end of the programme, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA). This includes a practical skills test, a professional discussion, and a review of your portfolio to demonstrate your competence and readiness to work independently as a bricklayer.

To begin the apprenticeship, you’ll need to secure employment with an organisation willing to support you as an apprentice. While it is your responsibility to find and apply for suitable roles, Bolton College is here to help. We have a dedicated Job Shop located within the college, where you can meet with an Employer Engagement Advisor for tailored support and advice on how to apply for vacancies and prepare for interviews.

After completing this apprenticeship, you could progress into roles such as Skilled Bricklayer, Site Supervisor, or even start your own business. You may also choose to continue your training with a Level 3 qualification in construction or site management.

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a long-term career in the construction industry, with opportunities to work on residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
