We all need to use English every day, for that precious next job or to help your children with their homework etc. Our English courses are FREE if you do not already have a C or above in English or maths. We can help get you there.

You can study within your community or at our main campus. Dates and times are flexible to suit your study.

  • What do I need to join the programme?

    All students are required to carry out a pre-course assessment. If we think you need more time before progressing to GCSE English, you will be placed on a stepping stone pre-GCSE English qualification which will enable you to improve your language skills.  If English is not your first language, you may also need to complete ESOL qualifications before progressing.

  • Is the course delivered at more than one level?

    Bolton College offers GCSE English at both Foundation and Higher tiers. Entry for the higher tier is dependent upon your attendance, homework and assessment results over the first part of the course – including the mock exam. 

  • How demanding are the courses?

    The short courses at Bolton College build on your existing knowledge and skills.  It will require a firm commitment from you to attend every class and complete a minimum of 3 hours of homework per week.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessment of GCSE English is at the end of the course in June and the GCSE grade is based 2 exams & 1 speaking and listening assessment.

  • How do I apply?

    If you're interested in studying English with us, your first step is to attend a 'Welcome' session. You will have the chance to talk to tutors and we will check your current level of literacy to ensure you are on the right course.
