Essential Digital & Computer Skills Entry Level 3 (EDSQ)

  • Overview of the course

    This qualification focuses on bridging the gap between the digital first (individuals who own multiple digital devices and interact with online content on a daily basis) and the digitally disengaged (individuals who have little or no experience of using digital devices and accessing online content). Research conducted in 2019 found that 8% of the UK adult population have no basic digital skills, 22% of people do not have the essential digital skills needed for day-to-day life and 53% of UK employees do not have the digital skills required for work. With innovations in technology and the increasing demand for online services, it is important to ensure that all individuals are able to participate in life, work and further study by providing them with the opportunity to gain these increasingly important digital skills. Without these skills, individuals will be at a significant disadvantage. It was found that on average, adults who lack these basic digital skills earn less than those who are competent in the 5 skill areas covered in this qualification.

  • Entry requirements

    No prior knowledge, understanding, skills or qualifications are required before learners register for this qualification.

    Learners should normally have English skills at the level below their chosen qualification. As suggested by the DfE, some adults may need support to handle and use digital devices for the first time and to learn the following foundation skills before enrolling on an Entry level 3 course:
    • Turning on a device (including entering and updating any account information safely, such as a password)
    • Using the available controls on a device (such as a mouse and keyboard for a computer, or touchscreen on a smartphone or tablet)
    • Use of accessibility tools (including assistive technology) to make devices easier to use (such as changing display settings to make content easier to read)
    • Interacting with the home screen on a device
    • Connecting to the internet (including Wi-Fi) safely and securely and opening a browser
    • Opening and accessing an application on a device.
  • How will I be assessed?

    This qualification aimed at learners who:
    • Have little or no prior experience in using digital devices or the internet, who wish to gain digital skills for specific work, life or study purposes.
    • Require basic skills to provide personal information to government agencies and utility companies.
    • Would like to have a digital presence and communicate with family, friends, peers and colleagues who live at a distance.

    Start at Entry level, which means they are ideal for learners with no or low digital skills. You will receive a nationally recognised qualification on completion of your course, with the option of progressing to Level 1.

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.

    Adult learners (19+) must provide evidence of their existing qualification at enrolment. Learners may not be able to enrol if this information is not provided when requested. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance.
