The sports department at Bolton College is partnered with Bolton Wanderers Community Trust; as part of a Youth Social Action Project, students utilised funds from the Premier League Inspires Programme to fund the hamper and give back to their community.
The Level 1 students sourced a variety of items for the hamper, including wool and knitting needles to keep patients entertained during the festive period.
The students also recorded Christmas greetings for hospice patients, some delivered in their native language – many of the students are new to the UK, having arrived from countries as far flung as Somalia, Uganda and Kenya.
Andy Foster, who teaches at Bolton College on behalf of Bolton Wanderers Community Trust, said: “It was great seeing the students pull together for this project. Some of them have faced difficult times, but they come to College each day with a smile, and face any challenges head on.”
Ryan Gillibrand, Learning & Development Mentor for Sport at Bolton College said: “The students really thought about what would benefit the hospice patients, and they all agreed that giving back to society is a great feeling.”
Emily Wilkes, Senior Development Officer at the Trust said: “I think they did a fantastic job and I hope that the hospice patients enjoy the contents of the hamper as much as the students enjoyed putting them together.”
Kathryn Willett, Interim Fund Raising Manager at Bolton Hospice said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to Bolton College’s sports students for putting together such a kind and thoughtful hamper for our patients to enjoy.
“What a perfect way to spread some Christmas cheer after such a terrible year!”
