    Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

    Can you picture yourself on the stage, the screen or even behind the camera? If you are a creative and ambitious individual, our performing arts courses will help you to break into this competitive industry.

    During this one-year course, you’ll have the opportunity to work towards the Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in stages that will build and develop your skills.

    Work experience is an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work. All the practical work will be leading towards public performance either in the College theatre or other venues around Bolton.
  • What you'll learn

    Some units will be studied with the whole level 3 Performing Arts cohort, which will involve the following:
    • Performing to an Audience
    • Rehearsing for Performance
    • Performance Workshop
    • The Healthy Performer
    • Singing Skills for Actors and Dancers

    You will also select a preferred performance pathway to specialise in and will study option units in either acting or dance. You will choose either:

    Acting Pathway (Actors only)
    • Principles of Acting
    • Drama Improvisation
    • Theatre for Children
    • Contemporary Theatre Performance
    • Performing with Masks
    • Devising Plays

    Dancing Pathway (Dancers only)
    • Contemporary Dance
    • Jazz Dance
    • Ballet Technique
    • Urban Dance
    • Dance Improvisation
    • Tap Dance

    Throughout the course, you will participate in technique classes aimed at developing your skills in acting, dance or singing. You will practise a range of performance styles, which will help you to become a more experience and confident performer. You will receive regular, developmental feedback from your tutors to ensure that you make excellent progress.

    You will work on a different performance project every term, which may include: Christmas Pantomime, Schools Tour, TV and Film Project, Site-Specific project, Individual Showcase, Dance Show or full-scale Musical.

    We encourage our students to continue their English & maths study to Level 3.

  • How will I be assessed?

    There’ll be continuous assessment throughout the course. You’ll be assessed on your practical work in class, public performances and your written log books.
  • Future opportunities

    After you have completed the course you could progress onto the BTEC Performing Arts Extended Diploma. This is our second course at Level 3 and lasts for one year. On completion of the Extended Diploma Level 3, you will be able to apply for higher education courses or further training.

    Following further study you could work as a:
    • Actor, entertainer or presenter and you could earn an average of around £34,000 per year depending on experience and role.
    • A Stage Manager, earning between £18,000 and £45,000 a year.
    • A Choreographer, with your salary dependent on experience, reputation and the production you’re working on.
  • Entry requirements

    We ask that you have five GCSE grades 9-4 (A* – C), including English
    Merit/Distinction BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts.
    Prior experience of dance classes, singing lessons or theatre work would be an advantage.
  • Is there anything else I need to know?

    Your programme consists of the following elements:
    • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
    • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
    • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
    • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
    • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

    All learners will complete an individual learning plan which will be discussed with their tutor throughout the course.


    You may not have to pay tuition fees at all, if you fall into one of the groups eligible for fee exemptions. If you feel you may be eligible or would like someone to explain course fees in more detail, please call our helpline on 01204 482 000.

    Adult Learners

    Adult learners (19+) must bring their qualification certificates with them to enrolment. Learners will not be able to enrol without this information. If you have lost any certificates please contact your school in the first instance. If they are unable to provide a copy, you can contact one of the following exam boards (your school will be able to tell you which one you need):
    If you are unable to provide certificates you will be asked to complete a self declaration form when you enrol.
