What You'll Learn
You’ll gain a thorough understanding of vehicle systems including engines, brakes, suspension, steering, and electrical components. You’ll learn how to carry out routine servicing, inspections, diagnostics, and complex repairs using industry-standard tools and techniques.
The course also covers health and safety, environmental regulations, customer communication, and the use of diagnostic equipment. You’ll develop the ability to interpret technical information, follow repair procedures, and work to manufacturer specifications

How Will I Be Assessed?
You’ll be assessed throughout the apprenticeship through practical observations, written assignments, and a portfolio of evidence. Your college tutor and employer will help you track your progress and prepare for your final assessment.
At the end of the programme, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which includes:
A practical skills assessment
A professional discussion
A multiple-choice knowledge test

Entry Requirements
There are no formal qualifications needed to start the Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship—just a strong interest in vehicle mechanics and a desire to work in the automotive industry. This programme is ideal for individuals who have completed a Level 2 qualification or have relevant experience in motor vehicle maintenance.
However, some employers may set their own entry requirements, such as GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above. If you have not yet achieved these, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—Bolton College will support you throughout your training.

After completing this apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work as a Motor Vehicle Technician, Diagnostic Technician, or Service Technician. You may also choose to progress to higher-level qualifications in automotive engineering or specialise in electric and hybrid vehicle systems.
