The Level 3 IT Solutions Technician Apprenticeship is designed for individuals looking to launch a career in IT support, systems development, or infrastructure management. This programme equips apprentices with the skills and knowledge to develop, implement, and maintain complete IT solutions that support business operations and drive efficiency.

Apprentices will work within IT teams across a variety of sectors, gaining hands-on experience in both hardware and software environments. They will learn how to analyse requirements, design and test solutions, and provide ongoing support to ensure systems remain secure, functional, and aligned with business needs.

Key Responsibilities
Gathering and analysing technical requirements to design effective IT solutions
Developing and maintaining hardware and software systems
Supporting networks, operating systems, and applications
Implementing solutions using structured methodologies and frameworks
Conducting testing and troubleshooting to ensure reliability and performance
Creating and maintaining technical documentation
Communicating with stakeholders to understand needs and explain solutions
Applying cybersecurity principles and working securely across systems
During this apprenticeship, you will develop a strong foundation in IT systems, gaining the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to support and maintain computer infrastructure in a business environment. You’ll learn how to install and configure hardware and software, manage networks and databases, and troubleshoot technical issues. You’ll also explore how to analyse user requirements, design IT solutions, and apply cybersecurity principles to protect systems and data. In addition, you’ll build essential workplace skills such as communication, documentation, and project support, preparing you for a successful career in IT support, development, or infrastructure roles.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll be supported by a dedicated work-based tutor who will guide you through a series of tasks and projects designed to help you build your Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) in line with the apprenticeship standard. These tasks will be completed in your workplace and may include written assignments, practical activities, and reflective learning, all tailored to your role and development.

At the end of your practical training period, you’ll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA). This final assessment includes a project—where you’ll showcase your marketing skills in action—and a professional interview, where you’ll discuss your work and demonstrate your understanding of the role. Successfully passing both elements is required to complete your apprenticeship
There are no formal qualifications required to begin the IT Solutions Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship—just a genuine interest in technology and a desire to learn how IT systems support modern businesses. This programme is ideal for individuals who are logical, hands-on, and eager to explore how hardware, software, and networks work together to deliver effective IT solutions.

However, if you have not yet achieved a GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in English and Maths, you will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in these subjects as part of your apprenticeship. Don’t worry—dedicated support will be provided to help you achieve these essential qualifications alongside your technical training.
If you’re interested in this apprenticeship, the first step is to register your interest with Bolton College. This will add you to our mailing list so we can keep you informed about any upcoming apprenticeship vacancies or employer opportunities in your chosen field.

To begin the apprenticeship, you’ll need to secure employment with an organisation willing to support you as an apprentice. While it is your responsibility to find and apply for suitable roles, Bolton College is here to help. We have a dedicated Job Shop located within the college, where you can meet with an Employer Engagement Advisor for tailored support and advice on how to apply for vacancies and prepare for interviews.
