Cake Decoration – Introduction to
This course aims to introduce you to the basic techniques in cake decoration. The course will introduce you to the use of equipment, tools and materials used in cake decoration, with a particular emphasis on design, organisation, hygiene and safety.
By the end of the course learners will have gained knowledge of the materials used in cake decoration and their application. Learners will have an appreciation of colour, design, proportion and texture applicable to the subject.
Many of our learners come to study with us as we have industry-experienced tutors who have showcased learners work at Cake International (Bolton College won ‘Best College & Group Display’) and has also been featured in the National Press (Vogue Magazine).

What You'll Learn
You will gain knowledge of good hygiene practices and will implement these in the classroom. The law and Codes of Practice relating to colours and materials used will be covered.
The course will also cover:
- The selection, storage and care of tools/equipment
- Storage of materials/ingredients,
- Focus on simple sugarpaste techniques including the use of sugarpaste to coat a sponge cake.
Note that this course does not include any baking.

How Will I Be Assessed?
You will agree an individual learning plan (ILP) with your tutor identifying what you want and need to gain from the course. You will build up a folder which shows the range of skills and knowledge you have developed. You will receive supportive feedback throughout the course and track your progress in your Individual Learning Plan.
Entry Requirements
No previous experience is necessary just an interest in cake decoration. The course is structured to proceed from a very basic level for those new to the subject and those looking to enrol on the Cake Decoration Level 1 Course.

Learners successfully completing this course may progress to the next level cake decoration course. Learners completing this short course to a good standard may apply for a place on the FDQ Cake Decoration Level 1 course should they wish to gain a qualification. - As it is intended that the items produced on the course are for eating, learners are expected to wear an apron, have appropriate flat, closed footwear and have long hair tied back.
