- Progress Tutors
All students aged between 16 to 19 and adult learners enrolled on substantial vocational courses (six hours or more, per week), will take part in weekly tutorials led by their Progress Tutor or Personal Tutor for thirty-four weeks of their programme.
All students aged 16 to 19 will be allocated a Progress Tutor to support throughout your studies. Tutorials explore a wide range of topics that promote personal development and future success including key themes such as British Values, citizenship, online safety, physical health, equality and diversity, financial literacy, preparing students for their next steps and UCAS sessions to support university applications. Tutorials prepare students for life beyond college by helping them to make healthy and informed decisions.
Progress Tutors play a key role in supporting students’ ambitions for academic success by conducting regular reviews and closely tracking progress throughout tutorial sessions. This ongoing guidance actively support students’ academic success by encouraging high achievement and helping them stay focused on attaining high grades.
Employability skills are integrated throughout the tutorial programme giving students the chance to develop soft skills including confidence, teamwork, and effective goal setting helping to prepare them for their next steps.
📆 Tutorials for Full-Time Students
Each week, you’ll meet with your Progress Tutor alongside your course group to explore themes around personal and social development, citizenship, future progression, and equality, diversity and inclusion. These sessions often link to current topics in the media or wider society.
You’ll also receive one-to-one time with your Progress Tutor each term. These individual check-ins are a great opportunity to:
- Celebrate your successes
- Discuss your course progress
- Set targets for improvement
- Plan your next steps
🕒 Tutorials for Part-Time Students
If you’re studying on a part-time course, your course teacher will also serve as your Progress Tutor. You’ll have full access to all tutorial resources online via Moodle, allowing you to engage with important topics and track your progress flexibly.
How often do I meet my progress tutor?
Students meet with their Progress Tutor three times per year - once each term for a personalised one-to-one review. These meetings are designed to ensure students are on track with their studies, meeting their targets and celebrating their achievements.
Progress Tutors also support students in reflecting on their progress and setting goals for the future.
As part of these sessions, Progress Tutors will discuss VALUES as part of their one-to- one to promote with students achieving high grades:
- Visions – Exploring career prospects and long-term goals to ensure students are on the right course.
- Attendance – Monitoring attendance throughout the course and recording it as part of the one-to-one. The College’s high expectation is 100% attendance with a minimum of 90%
- Lanyards – Reinforcing the importance of wearing lanyards at all times to support safeguarding and workplace expectations.
- Understanding – Reviewing behaviour, celebrating positive contributions, and addressing any concerns.
- Effort and Engagement – Reviewing students’ progress on Markbook to discuss predicted and actual grades to ensure students are aware of their progress and identifying ways to improve their grades activities such as personal directed study, making use of the Learning Resource Centre, and attending maths/English workshops. Progress Tutors also encourage students to make the most of their time at college by engaging in enrichment activities, volunteering, and opportunities beyond their curriculum
- Support – Ensuring students have access to study support, access arrangements, additional resources, and wellbeing services. Progress Tutors will check in with students and arrange further support if needed.
SMART targets are discussed in the 1-1 review and targets are agreed based on what has been discussed in your meeting. These will be reviewed in the next meeting
What should I bring to a one-to-one?
Students are not required to bring anything to their Progress Tutor one-to-one, as all relevant information can be accessed via their Pro Portal. However, some students choose to bring documents such as CVs or UCAS applications so their Progress Tutor can review them and offer guidance or signpost to the appropriate support. We welcome students to bring any course-related materials they feel would be helpful during their session.
Can I contact my tutor outside of scheduled times?
tudents are welcome to email their Progress Tutor outside of college hours if they have questions or need support. While tutors may not respond immediately, they will reply during their working hours once they return to work.
What support can you offer?
Progress Tutors offer a wide range of support to help students succeed both academically and personally. They are trained to signpost students to the most appropriate services, including careers support, enrichment opportunities, wellbeing services, study support, and UCAS guidance. Progress Tutors also play a key role in helping students achieve high grades by reviewing current performance, discussing predicted and actual grades, and identifying steps for improvement. This includes developing effective study skills and setting SMART targets. They also encourage students to make the most of college resources such as the Learning Resource Centre, maths and English workshops, and personal directed study time.
