Learners on Bolton College’s ‘skills for independent living and preparation for work’ programme have launched their own commercial jewellery line.

As part of a ‘skills for enterprise’ unit of the wider programme, the learners have been making sustainable jewellery by recycling broken and unwanted pieces of jewellery. The original pieces of attractive costume jewellery will go on sale in Bolton College’s on campus Atom shop this term.

With new found enterprise skills, the learners will take the offering a step further by launching a jewellery repair service for staff and students, also located at the Atom shop.

The jewellery line is just one enterprising initiative which the learners have launched as part of the ‘skills for independent living’ programme. Other activities have seen them grow and sell plants and vegetables, as well as building small timber products, art pieces and gift cards.

Curriculum leader, Suzanne Watson, said: "The students are really proud of the jewellery that they have made. Most find learning environments like ours suit them – it’s where they can put their practical abilities to excellent use.

“Besides selling the items in our college shop, we are in the process of setting up our ‘Young at Art’ website through which we will be able to showcase the fantastic things these talented learners are creating, from canvas art pieces through to other handmade goods."

Bolton College’s nationally acclaimed ‘preparation for work’ course helps youngsters become more employable through skill building activities. The college has strong relationships with local employers who then work to secure voluntary placements and paid for working opportunities.

Course tutor, Lynne Leaver added: “Through the ‘skills for independent living and preparation for work’ programme we create workplace environments within the college which replicate disciplines such as timekeeping, teamwork and using the correct equipment safely. It’s a vital tool for preparing them for a real life working environment.”
