Mayor samples delicious desserts in College

Bolton College welcomed a VIP visitor last week – Councillor Lynda Byrne, the current Mayor of Bolton.

The Mayor visited the main campus on Deane Road to see how students and staff are helping to contribute towards her annual charity ball, which takes place on Friday 10th March.

Foundation learners in the College’s STEM Centre really got into the fundraising spirit, valeting and washing cars to raise money for the Mayor’s four charities, Bolton Hospice, Bolton branch of the YMCA, Bolton Carers Support and Crossroads Care Bolton.

The mayoral car was even treated to a valet by the hard-working students.

Over in the College’s training kitchens, the catering students created seven spectacular desserts for the Mayor to sample. They served up Bailey’s Cheesecake, crème brulee, popcorn panna cotta, tarte flan, lime & cranberry bread & butter pudding, plum & frangipane tart and a chocolate fondant.

With help of the College Principal Bill Webster, the Mayor settled on the chocolate fondant, which will be replicated by the Whites Hotel for the ball, and served to over 200 guests.

After making the difficult decision, the Mayor said ‘All of the students have done so well, the desserts really were top class and something I’d expect from an expensive restaurant.’

Bill Webster also commented ‘The Mayor was faced with an impossible task, having to select from seven wonders of the dessert world – if the students carry on like this, they will be the star chefs of the future!’.

The Mayor ended her visit in the College’s impressive construction block, where she was presented with the mayoral tombola, created by students last year and fitted with a plaque to commemorate her year-long tenure.
