27 May 2018

Learners from Bolton College enjoyed a masterclass in social media wizardry when Google mentor, entrepreneur and tea expert May King Tsang returned to her home town.

May King, who attended Deane School and now lives in Sheffield, was invited by the College to share her journey to success with the College’s Computing Level 3 students.

May King’s illustrious career started after emigrating to Australia, where she used her life-long passion for tea to become a renowned tea expert, building up her own business in the process, and eventually working alongside famous chefs and appearing frequently on TV and in the media.

She has always been an innovative user of social media, and after moving back to the UK after six years, she used this medium to continue to build her reputation as a tea expert. Shortly after, she was headhunted by Google UK, and is now a Business Mentor and Speaker, helping business start-ups build on their digital skills, whilst continuing to run her successful tea business.

Students benefited from May King’s vast knowledge, and she served up invaluable advice, best practice, tips and techniques. Michael Kniveton, Business & Computing Lecturer at Bolton College said, “May King really made a big impression. She was very friendly and relatable, with an inspiring story to tell. The learners really took a shine to her, evidenced by the amount of questions May King fielded at the end of the presentation”.

May King, who grew up in Heaton, added, “Returning to Bolton was lovely. I enjoyed speaking to the students who were so enthusiastic and engaged. I’d love to return to Bolton College in the future, and share more of my knowledge with the learners; I was made to feel very welcome”.
